A Nose for Endings

[Marc Malvolio first smelled it at his cousin’s wedding—Chanel No. 5 mixed with something rotten. His grandmother’s perfume. She’d been dead for twelve years.]

[He followed the scent to Uncle Philip, red-faced and sweating. The smell clung to him like a shadow. Three days later: aneurysm.]

[Marc told no one. Numbers were reliable. Smells were not.]

[But it happened again. The bank teller. The barista. Each time, the smell intensified, making his eyes water and stomach clench.]

[He began attending funerals to verify his macabre ledger. At the third one, he noticed a woman watching him.]

[“You have the look of someone who’s seen too much,” she said days later at his coffee shop.]

[Her card read: “Delilah H., Mortician. Putting the 'fun’ in funeral since 2018.”]

[“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Marc said.]

[“Just as I don’t know that you’ve been to three of my services without knowing the deceased.”]

[She appeared again at Mrs. Abernathy’s funeral. Marc had smelled death on her at the pharmacy.]

[“We need to talk about your hobby,” Delilah whispered.]

[Over coffee, Marc confessed everything.]

[“So you smell death,” Delilah summarized. “Like a canary in a coal mine for the Grim Reaper.”]

[“It’s my grandmother’s perfume,” Marc said. “When I smell it, my throat closes up and my temples throb.”]

[“What are you supposed to do with this ability?” she asked.]

[“I don’t know.”]

[“Have you ever smelled it on yourself?”]

[“No.”]

[“What about me?”]

[Marc inhaled. Nothing but coffee and antiseptic.]

[“Why are you so interested in my morbid talent?” Marc asked.]

[“I’ve spent my life surrounded by death but never understood it. You’re a different perspective in my balance sheet.”]

[They developed an unusual partnership. He identified the marked; she prepared for their arrival. Morbid accounting.]

[Then one morning, Marc woke to the overwhelming scent in his bedroom. He called Delilah in panic.]

[“Maybe it’s not you,” she suggested.]

[In his closet, Marc found his grandmother’s forgotten fur coat. The perfume emanated from it like a toxic cloud, making his stomach lurch just as it had when he was a child.]

[When Delilah arrived, Marc was laughing hysterically.]

[“My grandmother,” he gasped. “I thought she was coming for me. But it’s just this coat I never wear.”]

[“Family,” Delilah said. “They’re the death of us all.”]

[Marc burned the coat that afternoon, watching his grandmother’s influence curl into smoke. The smell eventually faded.]

[He still smells death on strangers, but now he nods at Delilah across crowded rooms, their shared secret a macabre comfort. After all, in the ledger of life, death is the only guaranteed transaction.]
