냉장고 앞에서 시작된 아주 작은 전쟁 - A Very Small War That Started in Front of the Fridge [초 初]

[The refrigerator door was open.]

[Jieun looked at the plate.]

[The plate was empty.]

[”The cake is gone.”]

[Until yesterday there was one slice of cake.]

[That cake was the cake her mom made.]

[Jieun did not want to eat that one slice.]

[She had saved it because her mom is coming tomorrow.]

[But now there was only a fork on the plate.]

[Jieun slowly stood up.]

[And she went to Haneul’s room.]

[Haneul was lying on the bed.]

[”Haneul, are you sleeping?”]

[”No, I’m not sleeping.”]

[Jieun looked at Haneul.]

[There was chocolate on Haneul’s lips.]

[”Haneul, you ate the cake, didn’t you?”]

[”No, I didn’t eat it.”]

[”Then what is the thing on your lips?”]

[Haneul wiped her mouth.]

[”This is... just chocolate milk.”]

[Jieun could not believe it.]

[”We don’t have chocolate milk in our house, you know.”]

[Haneul didn’t say anything.]

[Jieun went back to the kitchen.]

[And she opened the trash can.]

[Inside the trash can there was the cake paper.]

[”Haneul, come here and look!”]

[Haneul slowly came to the kitchen.]

[”What is this? It’s the cake paper, you know.”]

[”Um... I don’t know.”]

[”Haneul, don’t lie.”]

[Haneul’s face turned red.]

[”I’m sorry. I ate it.”]

[Jieun got angry.]

[”Why did you eat it? That was mom’s cake!”]

[”I wanted to give it to my mom tomorrow, I’m telling you.”]

[Haneul lowered her head.]

[And suddenly she started to cry.]

[Jieun was startled.]

[”Why are you crying? Are you crying because of the cake?”]

[”No.”]

[Haneul wiped her tears.]

[”Today I got fired from the company.”]

[Jieun couldn’t speak.]

[At night, sleep wouldn’t come.]

[I was so sad that I opened the refrigerator.]

[And I saw the cake.]

[I was only going to eat one bite.]

[But I ended up eating all of it.]

[Jieun held Haneul’s hand.]

[”Why didn’t you tell me?”]

[”I was embarrassed.”]

[Jieun sighed.]

[”Silly. We’re friends, you know.”]

[The two of them sat at the table.]

[”It’s okay. You will find a better company.”]

[”Will it really be like that?”]

[”Yes, I think it will be.”]

[Haneul smiled a little.]

[”But about the cake, I’m really sorry.”]

[”It’s okay now.”]

[Right at that moment the doorbell rang.]

[Jieun looked at the clock.]

[”Who is it? It’s still morning.”]

[Jieun opened the door.]

[Mom was standing in front of the door.]

[”Mom! You said you were coming tomorrow!”]

[”I came one day early. Because I missed you.”]

[In mom’s hand there was a big box.]

[”This is a new cake. I made it again to give to you two.”]

[Jieun and Haneul looked at each other.]

[And they laughed at the same time.]

[”Why are you laughing? Did something happen?”]

[”It’s nothing, mom.”]

[”We fought because of one slice, that’s why.”]

[Mom opened the box.]

[This time the cake was very big.]

[”Then now eat a lot.”]

[”And don’t fight.”]

[The three of them sat at the table.]

[Haneul received the biggest slice.]

[”Eat a lot. Because today is a sad day.”]

[Tears came to Haneul’s eyes again.]

[But this time they were not sad tears.]

[”Thank you, Jieun.”]

[Jieun ate one bite of the cake.]

[”Mmm, mom’s cake really is the best after all.”]

[Mom said while smiling.]

[”Next time I’ll leave two slices in the refrigerator.”]

[The three of them laughed for a long, long time.]
