초록의 정원은 작다. 하지만 마을 사람들은 모두 안다.

[Chorok’s garden is small. But all the villagers know it.]

아픈 사람이 있으면 초록에게 간다.

[If someone is sick, they go to Chorok.]

오늘은 한 어머니가 왔다. 작은 딸을 안고 있다.

[Today a mother came. She is holding her small daughter.]

“제발 도와주세요. 딸이 죽어가요.”

[”Please help. My daughter is dying.”]

초록은 천천히 고개를 끄덕인다. 초록의 머리카락은 하얗고, 눈은 풀잎처럼 푸르다.

[Chorok slowly nods. Her hair is white, her eyes are green like grass blades.]

“딸을 일주일 동안 여기 두세요.”

[”Leave your daughter here for one week.”]

어머니는 울면서 딸을 정원에 눕힌다.

[The mother cries and lays her daughter in the garden.]

초록은 차 한 잔을 준다.

[Chorok gives her a cup of tea.]

“이 차를 마시고 집에 가세요. 일주일 후에 오세요.”

[”Drink this tea and go home. Come back in a week.”]

일주일이 지났다. 어머니가 다시 왔다.

[A week passed. The mother came back.]

정원에서 딸이 걸어 나온다. 건강하다. 웃고 있다.

[Her daughter walks out of the garden. She is healthy. She is smiling.]

하지만 딸의 눈은 이제 푸르다. 풀잎처럼.

[But the daughter’s eyes are now green. Like grass blades.]

“엄마!” 딸이 어머니를 안는다.

[”Mom!” The daughter hugs her mother.]

어머니는 너무 기뻐서 운다. “고마워요, 초록. 정말 고마워요.”

[The mother cries from joy. “Thank you, Chorok. Truly thank you.”]

초록은 미소만 짓는다.

[Chorok only smiles.]

그날 밤, 어머니는 이상한 꿈을 꾼다.

[That night, the mother has a strange dream.]

꿈에서 진짜 딸이 정원의 흙 아래에 있다. 뿌리들이 딸을 안고 있다.

[In the dream, her real daughter is under the soil of the garden. Roots are holding her.]

딸이 속삭인다. “엄마, 저기 있는 건 제가 아니에요.”

[The daughter whispers. “Mom, the one over there is not me.”]

어머니는 놀라서 일어난다.

[The mother wakes up shocked.]

옆에서 딸이 자고 있다.

[Beside her, the daughter is sleeping.]

달빛 아래, 딸의 머리에서 작은 초록색 잎이 자라고 있다.

[Under the moonlight, small green leaves are growing from the daughter’s head.]

어머니는 정원으로 달려간다.

[The mother runs to the garden.]

초록이 문 앞에 서 있다. 기다리고 있었다.

[Chorok is standing at the door. She was waiting.]

“왜요? 왜 우리 딸이에요?”

[”Why? Why my daughter?”]

초록은 부드럽게 말한다. “당신 딸은 죽었어요. 제가 새 딸을 만들었어요. 제 정원의 일부로요.”

[Chorok speaks softly. “Your daughter died. I made a new daughter. As part of my garden.”]

“돌려주세요!”

[”Give her back!”]

“그럴 수 없어요. 하지만...” 초록의 눈이 빛난다. “당신도 함께 있을 수 있어요.”

[”I can’t. But...” Chorok’s eyes shine. “You can be together too.”]

어머니가 마신 차. 일주일 동안 몸 안에서 자랐다.

[The tea the mother drank. It grew inside her body for one week.]

어머니의 손가락 끝에서 작은 뿌리가 나온다.

[Small roots come out from the tips of the mother’s fingers.]

초록이 손을 내민다.

[Chorok extends her hand.]

“가족은 함께 있어야지요.”

[”Family should be together.”]
