[I tossed my resignation letter onto the manager’s desk.]

[Manager Choi stared at me over his glasses.]

[”Are you joking right now?”]

[I smiled.]

[For the first time in ten years, I smiled for real.]

[”No joke. I’m quitting today.”]

[It felt like a heavy stone slid right out of my chest.]

[For ten years I lived like a shadow of this company.]

[I came in first and left last, but no one ever called my name properly.]

[Today was different.]

[I went back to my desk and started packing.]

[Kim, the chief at the next desk, said with a sneer:]

[”You got somewhere to go, at least?”]

[I looked him dead in the eye.]

[”Fetching your coffee was a real joy. Make your own from now on.”]

[Kim’s face flushed bright red.]

[In the hallway I ran into Executive Lee, who always looked down on me.]

[”What kind of tie is that? No sense at all.”]

[Today those words didn’t sting one bit.]

[”Sir, how about you fix that breath of yours first?”]

[The executive’s mouth dropped wide open.]

[I stopped as I passed the office pantry.]

[On the edge of the shelf sat a stack of documents balanced precariously.]

[I gave it a little push with my finger.]

[The papers came tumbling down all over the floor.]

[I gave a light nudge to the golf trophy the manager always bragged about.]

[Crash.]

[The office went dead silent.]

[Everyone clammed up and stared at me.]

[I straightened my shoulders and walked toward the door.]

[I pushed the glass door open and stepped outside.]

[The spring sunlight poured down, dazzling.]

[A warm breeze slipped in through my shirt.]

[I had never been this happy in my entire life.]

[I pulled off my tie and tossed it into a trash can by the road.]

[I strolled off slowly, whistling.]

[I didn’t look back, not even once.]
