“야옹, 야옹!” 나비는 유리창에 앞발을 톡톡 두드렸다. “저 사람 어때 보여?”

“글쎄, 별로 안 좋아 보이는데.” 검둥이가 시큰둥하게 대답했다. “표정이 너무 어두워. 우리랑 안 놀아줄 것 같아.”

[“Meow, meow!” Nabi tapped her paw on the glass window. “What do you think of that person?”

“Well, they don’t look that great,” Geomdungi answered flatly. “Their expression is too dark. I don’t think they’d play with us.”]

나비는 한숨을 푹 쉬었다. 벌써 몇 달째, 이 좁은 보호소 방에서 나가지 못하고 있었다. 따뜻한 햇볕이 스며드는 창가, 말랑말랑한 쿠션, 맛있는 사료까지 모든 게 완벽했지만, 나비에게는 진정한 가족이 필요했다.

[Nabi sighed deeply. It had already been several months, and she still hadn’t been able to leave this cramped shelter room. The warm sunlight streaming through the window, the soft cushions, the delicious food – everything was perfect, but Nabi needed a real family. ]

“하지만 검둥아, 언제까지 여기에 있을 수는 없잖아. 우리도 따뜻한 집에서 사랑받고 싶다고!” 나비는 애처로운 눈빛으로 검둥이를 바라보았다.

[“But Geomdungi, we can’t stay here forever. We want to be loved in a warm home too!” Nabi looked at Geomdungi with pleading eyes.]

검둥이는 나비의 간절한 마음을 모르는 바 아니었다. 사실 검둥이도 하루빨리 이곳을 벗어나고 싶었다. 하지만 몇 번의 파양 경험은 검둥이를 소심하고 조심스럽게 만들었다.

[Geomdungi knew Nabi’s desperate heart all too well. To be honest, Geomdungi also wanted to get out of this place as soon as possible. But several experiences of being returned had made Geomdungi timid and cautious.]

“알아, 나비야. 하지만 너무 서두르지 말자. 정말 좋은 사람을 만나야 해. 우리를 진심으로 아껴주고, 끝까지 함께할 사람 말이야.” 검둥이는 나비의 머리를 부드럽게 핥아주었다.

[“I know, Nabi. But let’s not rush. We need to meet someone really good. Someone who will cherish us sincerely and stay with us until the very end,” Geomdungi said, gently licking Nabi’s head.]

그때였다. 보호소 문이 열리고, 한 젊은 여성이 들어왔다. 수줍은 미소를 띤 그녀는 주변을 둘러보더니, 나비와 검둥이가 있는 방 앞에 멈춰 섰다.

[Just then, the shelter door opened and a young woman entered. With a shy smile, she looked around and stopped in front of the room where Nabi and Geomdungi were.]

“안녕하세요?” 그녀의 목소리는 부드럽고 따뜻했다. 마치 봄바람처럼. “혹시 얘들하고 잠깐 시간을 보내도 될까요?”

[“Hello?” Her voice was soft and warm, like a spring breeze. “Would it be alright if I spent some time with these two?”]

나비는 심장이 두근거렸다. 드디어 올 것이 왔다는 예감이 들었다. 검둥이도 잔뜩 긴장한 표정으로 여자를 바라보았다.

[Nabi’s heart pounded. She had a feeling that what was meant to be was finally happening. Geomdungi, with a tense expression, also looked at the woman.]

여자는 조심스럽게 방 안으로 들어와 무릎을 굽히고 앉았다. 그리고는 나비와 검둥이에게 손을 내밀었다. “안녕? 나는 은수라고 해.”

[The woman carefully entered the room, bent her knees, and sat down. Then she held out her hand to Nabi and Geomdungi. “Hello? I’m Eun-su.”]

나비는 망설임 없이 은수의 손에 얼굴을 비볐다. 따뜻하고 부드러운 손길이 느껴졌다. 검둥이도 용기를 내어 은수의 손에 코를 킁킁거렸다.

[Without hesitation, Nabi rubbed her face against Eun-su’s hand. She felt a warm and soft touch. Geomdungi also got the courage to sniff Eun-su’s hand.]

“어머, 너희 정말 귀엽구나!” 은수는 환하게 웃으며 나비와 검둥이의 머리를 쓰다듬었다.

[“Oh my, you two are so cute!” Eun-su said, stroking Nabi and Geomdungi’s heads with a bright smile.]

그렇게 은수와 나비, 검둥이의 첫 만남이 시작되었다. 은수는 매일 보호소에 찾아와 나비, 검둥이와 시간을 보냈다. 함께 산책을 하고, 장난감을 가지고 놀고, 이야기를 나누었다. 은수는 동물을 진심으로 사랑하는 사람처럼 보였다.

[And so began the first meeting of Eun-su, Nabi, and Geomdungi. Eun-su visited the shelter every day and spent time with Nabi and Geomdungi. They went for walks together, played with toys, and talked. Eun-su seemed like a person who truly loved animals. ]

“나비야, 너는 어떻게 생각해? 은수 씨 괜찮은 것 같아?” 어느 날 저녁, 검둥이가 나지막이 물었다. 은수가 떠난 후, 나비와 검둥이는 창밖을 바라보며 조용히 생각에 잠겨 있었다.

[“Nabi, what do you think? Do you think Eun-su is okay?” Geomdungi asked quietly one evening. After Eun-su left, Nabi and Geomdungi were quietly lost in thought, looking out the window.]

“응, 정말 좋아. 따뜻하고 상냥하고… 우리를 정말 아껴주는 게 느껴져.” 나비는 수줍게 대답했다.

[“Yes, she’s really nice. Warm and kind…I can feel that she really cares about us,” Nabi answered shyly.]

“나도 그렇게 생각해.” 검둥이도 동의했다. “이번에는… 정말 잘됐으면 좋겠다.”

[“I think so too,” Geomdungi agreed. “This time…I hope it goes really well.”]

며칠 후, 은수는 보호소 직원과 함께 나비와 검둥이 앞에 나타났다. 은수의 손에는 작은 이동장 두 개가 들려 있었다. 나비와 검둥이는 잔뜩 긴장한 채 은수를 바라보았다.

[A few days later, Eun-su appeared in front of Nabi and Geomdungi with a shelter staff member. Eun-su held two small carriers in her hands. Nabi and Geomdungi, tense with anticipation, looked at Eun-su.]

“나비야, 검둥아.” 은수가 조심스럽게 입을 열었다. “나랑… 함께 살래?”

[“Nabi, Geomdungi,” Eun-su began cautiously. “Do you want to…live with me?”]

나비와 검둥이는 서로의 눈을 마주 보았다. 그들의 눈빛에는 희망과 기대, 그리고 약간의 두려움이 서려 있었다. 과연 은수는 그들이 그토록 바라던 진정한 가족이 되어줄 수 있을까?

[Nabi and Geomdungi looked into each other’s eyes. Their eyes were filled with hope, anticipation, and a little bit of fear. Could Eun-su really be the true family they had been longing for?]

나비와 검둥이는 숨죽이며 은수의 대답을 기다렸다. 은수의 입가에는 따뜻한 미소가 번져 있었다. “사실… 며칠 동안 너희 둘 다 데려갈지, 아니면 한 마리만 데려갈지 고민을 많이 했어.”

[Nabi and Geomdungi held their breath, waiting for Eun-su’s answer. A warm smile spread across Eun-su’s face. “Actually… I’ve been thinking a lot these past few days about whether to take both of you or just one.”]

순간, 나비의 가슴은 철렁 내려앉았다. ‘설마… 우리 둘 다 데려가는 게 힘들다는 건가?’ 나비는 불안한 눈빛으로 은수를 바라보았다. 검둥이 역시 잔뜩 긴장한 기색이었다.

[In that moment, Nabi’s heart sank. ‘Don’t tell me… she’s saying it’s difficult to take both of us?’ Nabi looked at Eun-su with anxious eyes. Geomdungi also seemed very tense.]

“하지만,” 은수는 잠시 말을 끊더니 나비와 검둥이에게 한 걸음 다가왔다. “너희는 서로에게 너무 소중한 친구잖아. 그래서 결심했어.”

[“However,” Eun-su paused for a moment, then took a step closer to Nabi and Geomdungi. “You two are such precious friends to each other. So, I’ve made up my mind.”]

은수는 손에 들고 있던 이동장 두 개를 나란히 내려놓았다. “함께 가자, 나비야, 검둥아. 이제부터 우리 집이야.”

[Eun-su put down the two carriers she was holding side by side. “Let’s go together, Nabi, Geomdungi. From now on, this is our home.”]

나비와 검둥이는 환호성을 지르며 서로 부둥켜안았다. 드디어 꿈에 그리던 가족이 생긴 것이다! 은수는 웃으며 나비와 검둥이를 이동장에 차례로 넣었다.

[Nabi and Geomdungi cheered and hugged each other. Finally, they had the family they had always dreamed of! Eun-su smiled and put Nabi and Geomdungi into the carriers one by one.]

따뜻한 햇살이 스며드는 은수의 집. 나비는 푹신한 쿠션 위에서 기분 좋게 잠이 들었다. 검둥이도 만족스러운 듯 꼬리를 살랑이며 은수의 손길을 즐기고 있었다. 모든 게 완벽해 보였다.

[Eun-su’s house was filled with warm sunshine. Nabi fell asleep comfortably on the soft cushion. Geomdungi, seemingly satisfied, was enjoying Eun-su’s touch while wagging his tail. Everything seemed perfect.]

하지만 그때, 현관문이 벌컥 열리며 누군가가 들어왔다. “은수야, 다녀왔어! … 으응? 이 귀여운 녀석들은 누구?”

[But just then, the front door burst open and someone entered. “Eun-su, I’m home! …Huh? Who are these cute little things?“]

나른한 표정으로 낯선 목소리를 따라 고개를 돌린 나비는 그 자리에서 얼어붙고 말았다. 그곳에는 상상조차 하지 못했던 존재가 서 있었던 것이다.
