하린은 칼을 내린 채로 떨어지는 꽃잎을 향해 손을 뻗었다.

[Harin reached toward the falling petals with her sword still lowered.]

꽃잎은 손가락 사이로 빠져나갔다.

[The petals slipped out between her fingers.]

첫 번째 칼질이 빗나가서 가지가 찢어졌다.

[Her first cut went wrong and the branch tore.]

칼은 원래 은수 것이었다.

[The sword had been Eunsu’s.]

은수라면 한 번에 잘랐을 것이다.

[Eunsu would have cut it in one.]

“찢어진 가지는 빨리 죽어.”

[”A torn branch dies fast.”]

도장에서 몇 번이나 들은 말이었다.

[It was something she had heard many times at the training hall.]

작년에는 꽃잎만 한 봉지 담아서 갔다.

[Last year she went with only a bag full of petals.]

병실에 도착했을 때 꽃잎은 전부 갈색이었다.

[By the time she reached the hospital room, every petal was brown.]

은수는 그래도 예쁘다고 했다.

[Eunsu said they were pretty anyway.]

하린은 그 목소리를 아직도 기억한다.

[Harin still remembers that voice.]

그래서 이번에는 숨을 고르고 다시 칼을 들었다.

[So this time she caught her breath and raised the sword again.]

두 번째는 깨끗하게 잘렸다.

[The second cut was clean.]

가지 하나가 손바닥으로 떨어졌다.

[A single branch fell into her palm.]

버스 안에서 가지를 무릎 위에 눕혔다.

[On the bus she laid the branch across her knees.]

세 정거장 지나니까 꽃이 벌써 축 처졌다.

[After three stops the blossoms were already drooping.]

깨끗하게 잘라도 소용없었다.

[Cutting it clean had made no difference.]

병실 문을 열었을 때 은수는 자고 있었다.

[When she opened the door to the room, Eunsu was asleep.]

네 시 햇빛이 침대 발치까지 들어와 있었다.

[The four o’clock sunlight had come in as far as the foot of the bed.]

하린은 시든 가지를 그 빛 속으로 들어 올렸다.

[Harin lifted the wilted branch up into that light.]

은수의 팔뚝에 꽃 그림자가 떨어졌다.

[The shadow of a blossom fell on Eunsu’s forearm.]

그림자는 시들지 않았다.

[The shadow had not wilted.]

시든 꽃의 그림자와 싱싱한 꽃의 그림자는 똑같이 생겼다.

[The shadow of a dead flower and the shadow of a live one look exactly the same.]

은수가 눈을 떴다.

[Eunsu opened her eyes.]

한참 자기 팔을 내려다봤다.

[For a long while she looked down at her own arm.]

“이번엔 안 시들었네.”

[”This time it did not wilt.”]

하린은 팔이 아플 때까지 가지를 들고 있었다.

[Harin held the branch up until her arm ached.]
