The Day the World Forgot How to Scream

The Day the World Forgot How to Scream

[The blade slides through the onion like butter, then through skin, then bone. Darius watches his index finger separate from his hand with the detached curiosity of a man observing someone else’s kitchen disaster. The fingertip lands beside the diced shallots, a pale comma punctuating his prep work.]

[No scream. No shock. Just the peculiar sight of his own digit among the vegetables.]

[He flexes his remaining fingers. The wound should be screaming. Should be painting his cutting board crimson. Instead, it seeps lazily, like a leaky faucet that needs tightening. Darius picks up his severed fingertip, examines the clean cut. Professional work, really. He’s always prided himself on knife skills.]

[”Huh,” he says to the empty kitchen. “That’s new.”]

[The wire snaps with a sound like a gunshot. Thirty feet above the concrete, suspended between two buildings, Jake feels gravity reclaim him with enthusiastic malice. The safety harness—the one that should have caught him—dangles uselessly from the rigging above.]

[He hits the pavement with the wet thud of meat dropped from height. His left leg bends in directions legs weren’t designed for, the femur jutting through his jeans like a broken umbrella spoke. His shoulder blade cracks against the asphalt with the sound of stepping on bubble wrap.]

[The film crew rushes toward him, their faces masks of professional panic. Jake stares at his mangled limb, waiting for the agony that should be turning his world white-hot. Instead, he feels... nothing. Like watching someone else’s X-ray.]

[”I can see my bone,” he announces to the gathering crowd, his voice carrying the theatrical projection that made him famous. “That’s definitely not supposed to be there.”]

[The hydraulic press doesn’t discriminate. When the safety lock fails, it treats Tommy’s right arm like any other piece of metal requiring compression. The machinery groans, satisfied with its work, leaving his forearm flat as a pancake from elbow to wrist.]

[Tommy stares at what used to be his dominant hand. The bones have become abstract art, fragments floating in a canvas of flesh. His wedding ring, somehow intact, sits askew on a finger that no longer has proper joints.]

[He should be unconscious. Should be dying. Should be anything except standing here, methodically calculating how this will affect his overtime schedule.]

[”Well, shit,” he mutters, reaching for his phone with his good hand. “Gonna need to call in sick tomorrow.”]

[The rooftop party had been Maya’s idea. Twenty-four floors above the city, champagne and laughter mixing with the night air. She’d been dancing, spinning, lost in the music and the moment when her heel caught the edge of the decorative stonework.]

[The fall takes forever and no time at all. She watches the building’s windows flash past like a film strip, each floor a frame in her descent. The ground rushes up to meet her with the inevitability of gravity and poor decision-making.]

[She hits the sidewalk with the force of a small meteor. Her spine compresses like an accordion. Her ribs shatter into confetti. Her skull cracks against the concrete with the sound of an egg dropped on tile.]

[But she doesn’t die.]

[Maya lies there, a broken marionette on the pavement, staring up at the party she’d fallen from. People lean over the edge, their screams reaching her like distant thunder. She should be dead. Every law of physics, every medical textbook, every rational thought insists she should be dead.]

[Instead, she blinks. Breathes. Thinks.]

[”This is impossible,” she whispers to the night sky.]

[”Again some idiot wish.”]

[Three Hours Earlier]

[The lamp falls from the construction scaffolding like a brass meteor, striking Derek’s skull with the enthusiasm of gravity and poor timing. Stars explode behind his eyes as he staggers, the antique brass thing rolling away across the sidewalk.]

[”Jesus Christ!” he gasps, rubbing his head. “What the hell—”]

[The lamp splits open like a cracked egg, and smoke pours out in impossible colors. The genie materializes with the theatrical flair of a Vegas magic show, all flowing robes and cosmic arrogance.]

[”You have freed me from my eternal prison,” the genie intones, his voice carrying the weight of centuries. “I shall grant you three wishes, mortal, as is the ancient law.”]

[Derek’s head throbs. His vision swims. The lamp had hit him hard enough to crack concrete, and his thoughts scatter like startled birds.]

[”I—what? Wishes? This is insane. I think I have a concussion.”]

[”Choose wisely,” the genie continues, apparently immune to Derek’s confusion. “For wishes, once spoken, cannot be undone.”]

[Derek’s mind reels. His sister, dying slowly in the hospital. His mother’s arthritis. His father’s back pain from thirty years of construction work. All the suffering he’s witnessed, all the agony he’s been powerless to stop.]

[”I wish—” he starts, then stops. The genie waits with infinite patience. Derek’s head pounds, his thoughts fragmenting. “I wish there was no more pain in the world!”]

[The genie’s smile could cut glass. “As you wish.”]

[The world shifts, reality bending like heated metal. The genie dissolves back into smoke, the lamp sealing itself with a sound like a coffin closing.]

[Derek stands alone on the sidewalk, unaware that across the city, a chef has just discovered that severed fingers don’t hurt anymore. That an actor will soon learn broken bones feel like nothing at all. That a mechanic’s crushed arm will become merely an inconvenience. That a woman will survive a twenty-four-story fall and lie broken but breathing on the pavement below.]

[He rubs his aching head and walks away, never knowing he’s just broken the world’s most fundamental warning system.]

[Pain, after all, exists for a reason.]
