The End of a Century, A New Beginning

[The old man sat at the piano, his back hunched. His wrinkled fingers glided over the keys, creating a melody under the faint moonlight. In his youth, his music had stirred the world, but now only a lonely tune echoed in the empty room. As the last note faded, he looked out the window at the night sky. Among the countless stars, one twinkled brightly, as if winking at him—a reminder of his beloved wife.]

[The classroom hunkered beneath a leaden sky. Cracked concrete and shattered windows let in the biting wind. The human teacher, a woman in a white lab coat, stood before the chalkboard. Her students were…different.]

[One had tentacles. One had six legs. One’s skin gleamed with metal. Yet, there was a familiarity in their struggle to understand the human’s words. Sometimes, the human wrote strange glyphs on the board, and they would repeat them, their alien vocal organs morphing unnaturally.]

[Ji-hyun observed all this from the corner. Her reason for overseeing this class was simple: she knew English. No, 'knew’ wasn’t enough. She thought in this 'language’. After the war, she’d ended up among them. Enemy? No, something more.]

[“I,” a great spidery being interrupted, its voice box scraping out words, but the inflection was wholly wrong. “I…go…outside?”]

[Ji-hyun hesitated. She understood how dangerous the 'outside’ could be for them. Yet, she also knew the importance of their learning. Finally, she gave a curt reply, “Yes.”]

[Grey mist swirled among the headstones. Leaning on her cane, Yeon-hee crossed the lawn. Today was her hundredth birthday. Flowers were tossed on graves, and words of celebration murmured. But Yeon-hee’s eyes were fixed elsewhere – the distant, looming trees, the faint road beyond.]

[She remembered sweet summers of youth, nights ablaze with love, and the terror when war stole it all. Then came the long decades, a heap of ashes where ache and regret smoldered. People called long life a blessing, but to Yeon-hee, it was a curse.]

[Turning her back on the headstone, she crossed the lawn, her cane tapping out a rhythm. Onward. Onward. Cold mist wrapped around her, but Yeon-hee didn’t mind, even embraced it.]

[Her destination was the forest’s edge, beside an ancient oak. There, a rope already dangled overhead. Yeon-hee smiled, knowing the end of this journey was only the beginning.]
