밤 열두 시, 미나는 배가 고파서 부엌으로 갔어요.

[At twelve at night, Mina was hungry, so she went to the kitchen.]

미나가 냉장고 문을 열자 안에서 낮은 목소리가 들렸어요.

[As Mina opened the refrigerator door, a low voice came from inside.]

“안녕하세요, 미나 씨. 드디어 문을 열었네요.”

[”Hello, Mina. You finally opened the door.”]

미나는 너무 놀라서 입이 크게 벌어졌어요.

[Mina was so surprised that her mouth fell wide open.]

“냉장고가 말을 해요? 이게 꿈이에요?”

[”A refrigerator that talks? Is this a dream?”]

“꿈이 아니에요. 저는 십 년 동안 이 부엌에 있었지만, 아무도 제 이야기를 들어주지 않았어요.”

[”It is not a dream. I have been in this kitchen for ten years, but no one ever listened to me.”]

미나는 천천히 의자에 앉아서 냉장고를 바라봤어요.

[Mina slowly sat down on a chair and stared at the refrigerator.]

“좋아요. 그럼 한번 이야기해 보세요.”

[”All right. Then go ahead and talk.”]

“사실 저도 배가 고파요. 사람들은 음식을 넣기만 하고, 결국 다시 다 가져가요.”

[”The truth is, I am hungry too. People only put food in, and in the end they take it all back out.”]

“저는 십 년 동안 한 번도 먹어 본 적이 없어요.”

[”In ten years I have never once gotten to eat.”]

미나는 어이가 없었지만, 왠지 조금 미안한 마음이 들었어요.

[Mina found it absurd, but somehow she felt a little sorry.]

“그럼 제가 뭘 주면 될까요?”

[”So what should I give you, then?”]

“안에 있는 거 전부요. 우유도, 김치도, 달걀도, 하나도 빼지 말고요.”

[”Everything inside. The milk, the kimchi, the eggs, and do not leave out a single thing.”]

미나는 우유를 꺼내서 천천히 냉장고 안으로 부었어요.

[Mina took out the milk and slowly poured it back inside the refrigerator.]

냉장고는 만족스러운 듯 낮게 윙 소리를 냈어요.

[The refrigerator let out a low, satisfied hum.]

“아, 십 년 만에 처음이에요. 생각보다 훨씬 맛있네요.”

[”Ah, the first time in ten years. It is far more delicious than I expected.”]

미나는 김치도, 달걀도, 어제 먹다 남은 반찬까지 전부 넣어 주었어요.

[Mina put in the kimchi, the eggs, and even yesterday’s leftover side dishes.]

냉장고 안은 곧 텅 비었고, 냉장고는 행복하게 한숨을 쉬었어요.

[The inside of the refrigerator soon went empty, and it sighed happily.]

“정말 고마워요, 미나 씨. 이 밤을 평생 못 잊을 거예요.”

[”Thank you so much, Mina. I will never forget this night.”]

미나는 텅 빈 냉장고를 보면서 자기 배를 가만히 만졌어요.

[Looking at the empty refrigerator, Mina quietly touched her own stomach.]

“그런데 이제 제가 먹을 게 하나도 없네요.”

[”But now I do not have a single thing to eat myself.”]

냉장고는 잠깐 조용하더니, 다시 천천히 입을 열었어요.

[The refrigerator went quiet for a moment, then slowly spoke again.]

“걱정 마세요. 옆집 냉장고는 언제나 음식이 가득하거든요.”

[”Do not worry. The refrigerator next door is always full of food, you know.”]

“그리고 그 집 사람들은 밤에 아주 깊이 잠들어요.”

[”And the people in that house sleep very deeply at night.”]

미나의 입이 다시 한번 천천히 벌어졌어요.

[Once more, Mina’s mouth slowly fell open.]
