초인종이 세 번 울렸다.

가족만 아는 신호였다.

하지만 하연의 가족은 모두 죽었다.

문 밖에서 익숙한 목소리가 들렸다.

하진이었다.

죽은 줄 알았던 동생.

[The younger sister she had believed was dead.]

시신 없이 사진만 놓고 치른 장례식이 생각났다.

하연은 문을 열었다.

[Hayeon opened the door.]

그리고 총을 들었다.

하진은 총구 앞에서도 웃고 있었다.

하진은 두 손을 든 채 거실로 들어왔다.

일 년 전과 같은 향수 냄새가 났다.

“언니, 시간이 없어.”

하연은 웃었다.

차가운 웃음이었다.

[”Because I had to stay hidden.”]

하연은 총을 든 채 한 걸음 다가갔다.

[Hayeon stepped closer, gun still raised.]

“그날 밤 이야기를 해 줄까?”

[”Shall I tell you about that night?”]

“나는 늦게 집에 왔어.”

[”I came home late.”]

“문은 열려 있었고, 모두 거실에 누워 있었어.”

[”The door was open, and everyone was lying in the living room.”]

“경찰은 강도라고 했지.”

[”The police called it a robbery.”]

“그런데 이상하지.”

[”But it is strange.”]

“문에는 부서진 흔적이 하나도 없었어.”

[”There was not a single sign of forced entry on the door.”]

“엄마가 직접 문을 열어 준 거야.”

[”Mother opened the door herself.”]

“밤 열한 시에, 모르는 사람에게 문을 열어 줄 사람이 아닌데.”

[”At eleven at night, and she was not someone who would open the door to a stranger.”]

하연은 총구를 하진의 가슴에 겨눴다.

[Hayeon aimed the muzzle at Hajin’s chest.]

“초인종이 세 번 울렸겠지.”

하진의 얼굴에서 웃음이 사라졌다.

하진은 뒤로 물러서기 시작했다.

“그래서 너는 아직도 그 사람들에게 빚을 지고 있는 거야.”

그때 초인종이 세 번 울렸다.
