The Stone Pest

The Stone Pest

[The cheese puffs were a neon-orange heap, half-demolished, when the tapping started.]

[Tap. Tap. Tap.]

[”No,” Stan said, eyes fixed on the screen. “Absolutely not. Your turn.”]

[”It’s not,” Kevin whispered, yanking the mustard-yellow, pilled fleece up to his nose. “I got it when it was in the bathroom.”]

[”It was on the toilet, Kevin. Perched. That’s a different jurisdiction. That violates the code. It knows we’re watching something. It’s just being a pest. Your turn.”]

[TAP. TAPPITY-TAP.]

[This wasn’t a polite peck. This was the sound of small, marble knuckles trying to drill through the double-glazing.]

[Kevin groaned, slamming the pause button. The sudden, flat silence amplified the insistent pecking. He unstuck himself from the sofa, his socks making a small, peeling sound on the laminate, and ripped the curtain aside.]

[There it was. Angelo. Stone-grey, chipped, and slick with a strange moisture the dry night couldn’t explain. Its face, split by a delta of fine fractures, pressed against the pane. Those blank, pit-like eyes stared straight through him, probably calculating the film’s remaining runtime.]

[”Look,” Kevin said, his voice flat against the glass. He was past being scared; this was just admin. “Movie night. Sacred. You are not contributing to the snack fund, and you are terrible company.”]

[”Salt line?” Stan called from the couch.]

[”I tried the salt! It just gets clumpy. I tried the sage; the living room smelled like a failed Thanksgiving for three days.”]

[Kevin unlatched the window. Cold air, smelling of pavement and old marble, sliced in. He grabbed a handful of the neon-orange puffs.]

[”You’re a bad statue!” (flick) “A poorly-sculpted...” (flick) “...emotionally-needy statue!”]

[The orange dust clung to its damp cheek. One puff nested in an eye socket. The statue’s chipped smile seemed, if possible, smugger.]

[”This isn’t working,” Kevin sighed, locking the window. “It’s just staring. And now it’s cheesy.”]

[Stan stared at the thing through the window. It stared back. The paused image of a car chase on the screen was forgotten.]

[”I’ve got an idea,” Stan said, a grin of pure, petty inspiration spreading. He returned, not with salt or a crucifix, but with the black Sharpie they used to label expired leftovers.]

[”Oh, come on,” Kevin said, seeing Stan grab his keys. “You’re not.”]

[”It’s the only way,” Stan said, jamming his feet into his sneakers without untying them. “I’ll be right back. Guard the popcorn.”]

[Kevin watched through the window as Stan disappeared around the side of the house. A moment later, his shape appeared on the lawn, illuminated by the light spilling from the living room. He stomped over to the statue, which hadn’t moved. Stan uncapped the marker, braced one hand on the statue’s wing, and drew two thick, angrily-arched eyebrows above the hollow eyes. He stepped back, admired his work, then leaned in to add a small, curly mustache.]

[He stomped back inside, shivered, and kicked his shoes off.]

[”There,” Stan said, flopping back onto the couch and snapping the cap. “Now it just looks confused. And vaguely French. I can live with that.”]

[He hit play. Three blissful minutes of car chases passed.]
