The Weight of a Formless Hand

The Weight of a Formless Hand

[Whatever it was, it didn’t have a form, not a proper one, just an impression of a body that swelled and shrank with the crowd’s collective horror.]

[People’s eyes strained, trying to make sense of the thing standing before them, but their minds refused. One moment, it seemed to be towering, blotting out the sun; the next, it was so small that their gaze slid off it, like trying to focus on something in their peripheral vision. It wasn’t really there, but it was. No one could say how they knew this, only that every thought they had felt… borrowed.]

[Stolen.]

[They could feel it probing them, slipping through their heads as if sifting through old books in a dusty library. A strange, cold invasion. The murmurs started—a mix of fear and confusion—growing louder as panic rippled through the crowd. But no one moved. They couldn’t. Some realized it too late, hands twitching uselessly at their sides.]

[Then, one man in the crowd had a thought. A simple, desperate thought, out of dozens that flooded his mind in the span of a breath: I don’t want to die. His heartbeat thundered, his throat tightened, a tear lost its way down his cheek. It could kill me so easily.]

[The being shifted again, as though noticing him for the first time.]

[A low, droning sound, different for each person, began to resonate through the crowd. Some heard whispers, others screams. But they all understood the same thing: it was speaking to them.]

[“I’ll create a hand,” it said, the voice twisting into their ears, too loud and too soft at once. “My first one. Never had any use for one before.”]

[And just like that, the idea of a hand appeared. It wasn’t flesh, not really. Just a suggestion of a limb, something that flickered and pulsed, but the crowd saw it. And then they saw the fingers, long and skeletal, curling into a fist and releasing, like a newborn stretching its limbs.]

[A sound cracked through the air:

SNAP.]

[The hand pointed directly at the man who had shed the tear. His face drained of color, eyes wide, mouth opening to scream—but no sound came out.]

[“My first snapping of my first ever fingers,” the being mused, almost giddy. “You are now feeling a pain that for most is inconceivable. Your insides are liquefying, suffering a pressure beyond anything you have ever known.”]

[The man’s knees buckled, but he didn’t fall. His skin flushed deep red, eyes bulging in their sockets. But his lips couldn’t form a word. He was trapped in silence.]

[“You can’t even voice your pain. You no longer have the mechanisms needed for such action.”]

[A moment passed, stretched out painfully long. Then, with an almost bored flick of its ghostly wrist, the being spoke again.]

[“I’ll snap my fingers a second time. With it, your pain will be gone. And so will you.”]

탁.

[SNAP.]

[The man’s body erupted into a splash of blood and bone, his very existence reduced to a grotesque explosion of flesh and debris. The crowd flinched, some gagged, but no one screamed. They couldn’t. The image of him, or what had been him, smeared across the ground in wet streaks and fragments, filled their vision. His blood—his hair, his teeth—clung to the air like dust.]

[The being admired the mess for a moment, curious, but not satisfied. Its finger wiggled, testing the motion.]

[“What should I snap next?” it wondered aloud, the question slithering through their minds, wrapping around their fear like a noose tightening.]

[Someone from the back, no longer able to hold the terror, burst into laughter. The sound wasn’t human. It was sharp, jagged, more of a bark than anything else. Broken. It echoed through the square, snapping the last fraying strings of the crowd’s collective sanity.]

[The being’s presence swelled again, looming larger than before, and the laughing man fell to the ground, convulsing.]

[“Hmm,” the being mused, cocking its formless head as it studied the writhing man. “That’s new.”]

[Another SNAP.]

[The laughter stopped, and where the man had been, there was only a pile of twisted limbs, folded in on themselves like a forgotten puppet.]

[“I’m starting to enjoy this,” it said, the amusement barely masking its growing boredom. It turned its faceless gaze back to the crowd. “Maybe I should create more hands.”]
