Waltz of Death

Waltz of Death

[“Did you hear that?” Private Miller’s voice was a hoarse whisper, his words dissipating into the frigid night air like wisps of smoke.]

[Corporal Davis tilted his head, straining to hear over the distant thunder of artillery and the incessant chirping of crickets. They were crouched in a shell crater, the jagged edges providing scant shelter from the biting wind that scoured the war-torn landscape.]

[“Hear what?” Davis murmured, his fingers instinctively curling tighter around his rifle.]

[“Singing,” Miller breathed, his voice quavering. A trembling hand pointed towards the skeletal remains of a village, its shattered silhouette looming in the darkness.]

[Davis squinted, but the village was a mere jumble of shadows, an eerie tableau against the starless sky. The wind howled, but beneath it, he thought he caught a faint melody, a mournful, ethereal sound that sent shivers down his spine. It seemed to emanate from the ruins, a siren song that beckoned them closer.]

[“It’s just the wind,” Davis said, but his words lacked conviction. There was something in that melody, something that tugged at the edges of his sanity.]

[“No, listen!” Miller insisted, his voice rising in pitch.]

[As if on cue, the wind died down, and the singing grew louder, a haunting chorus of whispers and cries that wove together in a discordant harmony. It was the sound of the dead, Davis realized with a sickening lurch in his gut. He’d heard tales whispered around flickering campfires, stories of battlefields where the fallen refused to rest. He’d always dismissed them as the ramblings of men driven mad by the horrors of war. Now, he wasn’t so sure.]

[The pressure in his ears grew, a buzzing that resonated in his skull. He glanced at Miller, saw the raw terror etched into his face, his eyes wide and glassy.]

[“We need to go,” Davis croaked, his voice barely audible over the ghostly chorus. “Now.”]

[He reached for Miller’s arm, but his friend was already rising, his movements jerky and unnatural. “They’re calling me,” Miller whispered, his voice distant and hollow. “I have to go to them.”]

[Davis’s heart hammered in his chest as he watched Miller stumble towards the village, drawn by the siren song of the dead. He tried to follow, but his legs wouldn’t obey, his body leaden and unresponsive.]

[The singing reached a crescendo, a swirling vortex of sound that threatened to engulf them both. Davis watched helplessly as Miller disappeared into the ruins, swallowed by the darkness.]

[Then, as suddenly as it began, the singing stopped.]

[Silence descended, thick and oppressive. Davis stood alone in the crater, the wind keening through the shattered trees. Miller was nowhere to be seen.]

[“Miller?” Davis called, his voice small and lost in the vastness of the night. “Miller, where are you?”]

[There was no response. Davis forced himself to move, to climb out of the crater and stumble towards the village. The ruins loomed before him, a labyrinth of shattered stone and twisted metal.]

[“Miller!” he called again, desperation cracking his voice.]

[A shadow detached itself from the darkness, a familiar silhouette. Davis nearly sobbed in relief. “Miller, thank God. We need to get out of here.”]

[But as the figure drew closer, Davis’s relief turned to horror. It was Miller, but not the Miller he knew. His friend’s face was a mask of decay, his uniform tattered and stained with blood. Lifeless eyes stared out from sunken sockets, and when he smiled, it was a ghastly rictus grin.]

[“What’s wrong, Davis?” The thing that had been Miller spoke, its voice a rasping whisper. “Don’t you want to join us?”]

[Davis stumbled back, his mind reeling. He looked down at his own hands, saw the flesh sloughing off, exposing stark white bone. Realization dawned, cold and terrifying.]

[He was dead. They were both dead.]

[The singing began again, louder this time, a deafening chorus that filled the night. Davis felt himself being pulled towards it, his will crumbling, his mind unraveling.]

[As he took a step forward, he felt a hand on his shoulder, cold and skeletal. Miller grinned at him, a death’s head smile.]

[“Welcome home, brother,” he whispered.]
