금요일 오후, 수진은 휴게실 문을 열었다.

[Friday afternoon, Sujin opened the break room door.]

“다 들어와. 지금.”

[”Everyone, come in. Now.”]

병호가 먼저 들어왔다. 시우가 뒤에서 조용히 따라왔다. 소라는 이미 안에 앉아 있었다. 그리고 기태. 기태는 항상 웃고 있었다.

[Byeongho came in first. Siwoo quietly followed behind. Sora was already sitting inside. And Gitae. Gitae was always smiling.]

“이번 주에 이상한 일이 많았어,” 수진이 말했다. “누가 했는지 알아야 해.”

[”A lot of strange things happened this week,” Sujin said. “We need to find out who did it.”]

병호가 손을 들었다. “월요일! 월요일에 내 의자가 사라졌어요!”

[Byeongho raised his hand. “Monday! My chair disappeared on Monday!”]

“의자가 사라진 게 아니라, 화장실에 있었잖아,” 소라가 조용히 말했다.

[”The chair didn’t disappear, it was in the bathroom,” Sora said quietly.]

“그래! 그게 문제야!” 병호가 소리쳤다. “누가 내 의자를 화장실에 넣었어?!”

[”Yeah! That’s the problem!” Byeongho shouted. “Who put my chair in the bathroom?!”]

모두 기태를 봤다. 기태는 웃었다.

[Everyone looked at Gitae. Gitae smiled.]

“왜 저를 봐요?”

[”Why are you looking at me?”]

수진이 손가락을 테이블에 두드렸다. “화요일. 복사기.”

[Sujin tapped her fingers on the table. “Tuesday. The copy machine.”]

시우가 작은 목소리로 말했다. “아... 복사기요...”

[Siwoo said in a small voice. “Ah... the copy machine...”]

화요일에 누군가가 복사기에 종이를 넣었다. 그런데 그 종이에는 웃는 얼굴이 그려져 있었다. 부장님이 보고서를 복사했는데, 100장 모두 웃는 얼굴이 나왔다.

[On Tuesday someone had loaded paper into the copy machine. But that paper had smiley faces drawn on it. The department head copied a report, and all 100 pages came out with smiley faces.]

“부장님 얼굴을 봤어요?” 병호가 말했다. 그리고 웃기 시작했다. “하하하, 진짜 무서웠...”

[”Did you see the department head’s face?” Byeongho said. And he started laughing. “Hahaha, it was really scary...”]

“웃기지 마!” 수진이 말했다.

[”Don’t laugh!” Sujin said.]

“죄송합니다.” 병호가 바로 얼굴을 고쳤다.

[”Sorry.” Byeongho immediately fixed his face.]

기태는 커피를 마시면서 웃고 있었다.

[Gitae was drinking coffee and smiling.]

“수요일,” 수진이 계속했다. “냉장고.”

[”Wednesday,” Sujin continued. “The fridge.”]

소라가 눈을 감았다. “네. 냉장고요.”

[Sora closed her eyes. “Yes. The fridge.”]

수요일 아침, 누군가가 냉장고 안에 있는 모든 음식에 눈 스티커를 붙였다. 김밥도, 우유도, 김치통도. 냉장고를 열면 수십 개의 눈이 쳐다보았다.

[Wednesday morning, someone had put googly eye stickers on all the food in the fridge. On the gimbap, the milk, the kimchi container. When you opened the fridge, dozens of eyes stared back at you.]

“소라 씨가 비명을 질렀잖아요,” 시우가 말했다.

[”Sora screamed,” Siwoo said.]

“안 질렀어.” 소라가 말했다.

[”I didn’t scream.” Sora said.]

“아니, 들었어요. 3층에서도 들었어요.”

[”No, I heard it. They heard it on the 3rd floor too.”]

소라가 시우를 봤다. 시우는 입을 닫았다.

[Sora looked at Siwoo. Siwoo closed his mouth.]

기태가 말했다. “근데 그 눈 스티커, 귀여웠어요.”

[Gitae said. “But those googly eye stickers, they were cute.”]

다시 모두 기태를 봤다.

[Again, everyone looked at Gitae.]

“뭐요? 귀여웠잖아요. 사실이잖아요.”

[”What? They were cute. It’s true.”]

수진이 깊이 숨을 쉬었다. “목요일.”

[Sujin took a deep breath. “Thursday.”]

병호가 갑자기 일어났다. “목요일! 목요일이 제일 심했어요!”

[Byeongho suddenly stood up. “Thursday! Thursday was the worst!”]

목요일에 누군가가 병호의 컴퓨터 화면을 돌려놨다. 위아래가 반대였다. 병호는 한 시간 동안 고개를 거꾸로 해서 일했다.

[On Thursday someone had flipped Byeongho’s computer screen. It was upside down. Byeongho worked with his head upside down for an hour.]

“왜 IT팀에 전화 안 했어요?” 시우가 물었다.

[”Why didn’t you call the IT team?” Siwoo asked.]

“남자의 자존심이 있어!” 병호가 말했다.

[”A man has his pride!” Byeongho said.]

소라가 작은 소리로 말했다. “한 시간 동안...”

[Sora said in a small voice. “For an hour...”]

기태가 웃었다. 아니, 기태는 이미 계속 웃고 있었다.

[Gitae laughed. No, Gitae had already been laughing the whole time.]

“그리고 오늘,” 수진이 말했다. 목소리가 아주 낮았다. “오늘 아침. 내 사무실.”

[”And today,” Sujin said. Her voice was very low. “This morning. My office.”]

방이 조용해졌다.

[The room went quiet.]

“누군가가... 내 의자 높이를 바꿨어.”

[”Someone... changed the height of my chair.”]

병호가 말했다. “그게 뭐가...”

[Byeongho said. “What’s so bad about...”]

“매일! 매일 조금씩! 일주일 동안! 나는 내 다리가 짧아지는 줄 알았어!”

[”Every day! A little bit every day! For a whole week! I thought my legs were getting shorter!”]

시우가 입을 손으로 막았다. 병호가 돌아서 벽을 봤다. 소라는 테이블 아래를 봤다. 모두 웃음을 참고 있었다.

[Siwoo covered his mouth with his hand. Byeongho turned and faced the wall. Sora looked under the table. Everyone was holding back laughter.]

수진이 기태를 봤다. “기태 씨.”

[Sujin looked at Gitae. “Gitae.”]

“네?”

[”Yes?”]

“당신이죠?”

[”It was you, right?”]

기태가 커피를 내려놓았다. 천천히 일어났다. 모두를 둘러봤다.

[Gitae put his coffee down. He slowly stood up. He looked around at everyone.]

그리고 웃었다. 아주 넓게.

[And he smiled. Very widely.]

“증거 있어요?”

[”Do you have evidence?”]

“기태 씨 책상 서랍에 눈 스티커 300개가 있었어요,” 소라가 말했다.

[”There were 300 googly eye stickers in Gitae’s desk drawer,” Sora said.]

방이 다시 조용해졌다.

[The room went quiet again.]

기태가 소라를 봤다. “왜... 왜 내 서랍을 열었어요?”

[Gitae looked at Sora. “Why... why did you open my drawer?”]

“펜이 필요했어요.”

[”I needed a pen.”]

기태가 앉았다. 양손을 테이블에 올렸다. 그리고 말했다.

[Gitae sat down. He put both hands on the table. And he said.]

“좋아요. 제가 했어요.”

[”Fine. I did it.”]

“다?” 수진이 물었다.

[”All of it?” Sujin asked.]

“다요.”

[”All of it.”]

수진이 팔짱을 꼈다. “왜?”

[Sujin crossed her arms. “Why?”]

기태가 다시 웃었다. “이 사무실이 너무 조용했어요. 너무 지루했어요. 이번 주 재밌었잖아요. 다들.”

[Gitae smiled again. “This office was too quiet. Too boring. This week was fun, wasn’t it. All of you.”]

아무도 말하지 않았다.

[Nobody said anything.]

왜냐하면 사실이었으니까.

[Because it was true.]

병호가 먼저 웃었다. “하하하, 맞아, 내 의자가 화장실에 있었을 때 진짜 웃겼어...”

[Byeongho laughed first. “Hahaha, right, when my chair was in the bathroom it was really funny...”]

“병호 씨!” 수진이 소리쳤다.

[”Byeongho!” Sujin shouted.]

하지만 시우도 웃기 시작했다. 소라도 작은 소리로 웃었다.

[But Siwoo started laughing too. Sora laughed quietly too.]

수진이 혼자 남았다. 모두가 웃고 있었다. 수진은 화가 났다. 정말 화가 났다.

[Sujin was left alone. Everyone was laughing. Sujin was angry. Really angry.]

그런데 입꼬리가 올라갔다.

[But the corners of her mouth went up.]

“아... 하...”

[”Ah... ha...”]

“팀장님도 웃고 있어요!” 시우가 말했다.

[”The team lead is laughing too!” Siwoo said.]

“아니야! 이건 웃는 거 아니야!”

[”No! This isn’t laughing!”]

하지만 이미 늦었다. 수진도 웃고 있었다.

[But it was already too late. Sujin was laughing too.]

기태가 조용히 주머니에서 뭔가를 꺼냈다. 눈 스티커였다. 기태는 스티커를 수진의 컵에 붙였다.

[Gitae quietly took something out of his pocket. It was a googly eye sticker. Gitae stuck the sticker on Sujin’s cup.]

수진이 봤다. 컵이 수진을 쳐다봤다.

[Sujin saw it. The cup stared back at her.]

“...귀엽긴 하네.”

[”...It is kind of cute.”]
